If you have noticed my other articles about web browsers, you should know that i am big Opera fan, though i highly regard Firefox too. Though Firefox does always manage to steal away the highlights (no wonder, it is backed by the all mighty Google!), Opera continues to be a silent star. It is the pioneer in bringing a lot of exclusive browser features to light (e.g. tabbed browsing).
Speed Dial: Is the first thing you get to see as you apen the web browser. There are nine slots in total, and you can assign each to one of the websites you most frequently visit. So when you just open the browser and feel like opening your mail account, just click on the thumbnail you assigned for that url.
Importing Bookmarks: If you have other browsers like Internet Explorer, Konqueror, Firefox, etc. you can import your bookmarks from there very easily.
Tabbed browsing: Ok this is a common feature with most browsers currently, but you should be surprised to know that Opera was the first to introduce this really useful browser feature back in 1994.
FASTEST: Yep, Opera is surely the fastest browser on earth. There can be no confusion about this. Just ask any user who uses FF and Opera simultaneously, and you know the answer.
Live Bookmarking: Same as Foxmarks for firefox.
Download manager: The in built download manager is a lot detailed and better than the Firefox one.
Widgets: Sorry to say, this is the only area Opera needs to improve a lot. Is a lot behind the Firefox add-ons.
Security: Maximum. No question.
Opera Mini is also a very popular browser for mobiles. The only place Opera falls short of Firefox is the extensions. Otherwise, Opera is extremely sleek, useful and fast. Also, you will get a larger screen area with Opera, as the toolbars are sleek and well placed.
Here is the list of some features Opera was the first to introduce:
Tabs (1994), Page Zoom (1994), was the first to block pop-ups (2000), first to add search in toolbar (2000), deleting private data (2000), BitTorrent support (2005), Widgets (2006), Speed Dial (2007) and many more.
Let me know your experiences with the browser. How do you feel about it?
