Although the freewares are not always as effective as the commercial ones, but some of them are really good. If you can pick the best antispyware or even safer, if you can pick the best two of the freewares and make them work simultaneously, you will be almost totally safe.

Google Pack containing
Norton Security Scan and Spyware Doctor
This is an awesome deal. You can download both Norton ad Spyware Doctor from Google Pack, along with some other very cool applications like Skype, Google Earth, Picasa, Google Desktop, etc.
As you might know, the Spyware Doctor is the award winning commercial antispyware. But its starter edition comes free with Google pack, with free upgrades too. Though lacks some of the features of the commercial edition, it is still extremely good nonetheless. This is highly recommended.

LavaSoft AdAware 2007
Free Adware/Spyware Removal Tool
Is not as robust as the best of the commercials, but still better than a lot of the priced softwares. Don't have real-time protection and scheduled scan, so protects only when scanned. However, this also means no drain of resources (pc don't become slow) as no real-time protection.

Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1
Free Real-time Spyware Blocker
Free for validated Windows XP users. Though not one of the best, but still a very good supplementary blocker. Both manual and scheduled scas supported, also protects real-time. Very user friendly.

JavaCool Software SpywareBlaster 4.0
Free Spyware Immunizer
This is just a blocker, a very effective one. Will prevent all activeX contents, tracking cookies, trojans, hijackers, etc. But the program will not search for malwares already exsisting in your pc. Should be used with another program.

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5.2
Free Antispyware Software
Used to be one of the best, matching even the commercial ones. But stilol very good. The most outstanding feature is the immunization tool, which makes your browser more stronger and tougher against future threats.

AVG AntiSpyware Free Edition
AntiSpyware
With over 70 million users, Avg manages a top spot too. The antispyware is not the best, still is very handy. Can definitely try that out.

If you have to use the free antispywares, the best strategy would be to use two different Programs simultaneously. My recommendation will be to use Google Pack's Spyware Doctor, and Lavasoft AdAware 2007. However, you can decide what will suit you best.
