The best to the worst, all commercial antivirus programs are quite expensive, and with upgraded versions being released every now ad then makes it very hard to cope up. So here I represent the best free antiviruses in the market, all totally free, upgradable and completely legit. And some of these softwares are really good, and can compete hands on with the commercial softwares. For e.g, AVG and Avast almost always come in any top ten list by any reputed site, beating a lot of commercial programs in the way.
So lets get on with the list. The first four are the best in the business.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0
Avg is the most downloaded antivirus software throughout the world. It is a highly reputed antivirus, and always come in any top ten list of antivirus prepared by any top tech site. Does almost everything that you would expect from an antivirus, except there's no rootkit protection and linkscanner. Also, with the free edition there's no support too. However, the software is always upgradable, and works really well.

At all antivirus test, this software performs really well. This is a high recommendation from me. Also, this AV is CPU friendly, and takes less of its memory.
Free AVAST! Antivirus 4.X Home Edition
Avast in another top performing Free Antivirus that easily gets into the group of the best antimalware softwares. With an integrated antispyware too, this is my second best pick. Downloaded by over 50 million people worlwide, this software is very easy to use, and updates automatically. This is a very unique freeware since it comes with anti-spyware & anti-rootkit, which are usually availabe as paid upgrades in other freewares.

AVIRA AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus
This is my third best pick. Highly reagraded as one of the best antispywares, this freeware gives extremely good protection against dialers, worms ad trojans. Also got an inbuilt anti-rootkit. The best part is that it is extremely memory friendly, and has got a high scan speed. Light, user friendly and effective - all you need.

Bit Defender Free Edition v10
Handy free antivirus that includes an on-demand Virus Scan, Scheduler, Online Update, Quarantine and reports. The scheduler is very flexible and you can tweak that as per need (scheduler allows you to scan selected files, folders or drives automatically at user specified intervals). The interface of the program is changeable, and thats one of the nice parts.

The next three are not top-notch, but acts good as supplementary/secondary protection. If you use two antivirus to enhance protection, try using one of these with one mentioned above.
PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition 5
Another satisfactory software with automatic upgrades and provides real-time protection. Acceptable performance, and not many flaws. Since virus detection rates and cleaning abilities do not match those of Avast, AVG, so i would more likely recommend it as a good secondary antivirus.

ClamWin Free Antivirus Version 0.94
ClamWin is going to be the Next Big Thing in my opinion. Free, and better even, its a open source software, meaning that it will just get better and better with every release. The update feature keeps your free software current with protection against the latest viruses. The comprehensive online database is refreshed several times every 24 hours. Scans can be launched at your leisure or on a custom schedule.

However, this product does lack a few helpful features. For instance, ClamWin doesn't automatically scan newly activated files. Because of this, all of the files you recently downloaded from the web should be put through the scanner before execution. For computers which use two ativirus programs for security, I recommend this program highly as the secondary software.
Comodo AntiVirus 2.0 beta
I was rather surprised to see a large number of positive reviews about this software throughout the net. Some even claimed it to be one of the best protection available for PCs, free or paid. Free Comodo AntiVirus leverages multiple technologies (including on demand and on access scanning, email scanning, process monitoring and worm blocking), The software is memory friendly and do not hogg your system resources. Nice overall protection.

The next two, as I have seen and been recommended, are not worth a download. When you can get better protection, why try something that offers less. The two below just makes the list for the sake of being a free antivirus. I would recommend you to download something from those mentioned above.
VCatch Basic 5.0.21.2
Its just one anti-virus giving free protection. But i don't recommend this software, since complains are there that it itself installs many programs into the user's PC without letting him know. Also, its performance is not good, so again, do not go for this.

A-Squared Free
A less powerful and less-into-limelight software that gives you free protection. With free daily online updates and with fair detection rate, the software does fair. Though there are complains against this product to give false alarms sometimes.
